Highly talented children are clearly ahead of their contemporaries in their intellectual development. Characteristics may be:

- large vocabulary

- remarkable detailed knowledge in specific areas

- good observation abilities

- they quickly learn how to read and how to write

- accurate understanding of cause and effect relations

- the books they read are not age-restricted

- they solve tasks in an unconventional way

- they are strongly sensitive towards justice

- they are self-critical and strive for perfection

- they get bored when doing routine tasks

- they like to do things independently

- they are interested in adult topics

- they are distinctively individualistic

- they often look for friends among older kids

- they are extremely sensitive

- they do not accept authority without critical questioning
